Human Power And Our Fragile Environment

United States burns 20.4 million barrels of oil per day. We are damaging our environment beyond repair by burning copious amounts of hydrocarbons into our atmosphere. According to Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth”, global warming is melting the ice shelf and global sea levels could rise by over 20 feet. Looking at the global temperature data and it’s correlation to greenhouse gas emissions, I believe there is indisputable evidence that burning hydrocarbons is responsible for most of the global warming that is wreaking havoc on our weather systems.

Aside from the frightening global warming issue, I am also deeply concerned about our attitude with regard to consumption. Up until just last year, the US was the worlds largest consumer of natural resources. According to David Suzuki’s “Sacred Balance” (I absolutely LOVED this book – everyone should read it), since 1940, Americans alone have used up as large a share of the Earth’s mineral resources as all previous generations put together.

The real scary thing is, as of last year, consumption in China eclipsed that of the United States in all the worlds resources but oil, and China’s 1.3 billion person economy is growing at a frightening 8% annually

Why is this concerning? There are around 6 billion people living on this rock today. Estimating future population growth at only 1% per year, the numbers are staggering. By 2015, experts estimate there will be 7 billion people on the planet. By 2050, there may be as many as 10 billion people living on Earth. Can mother Earth support this extended family? When will we reach the limit of our resources?

We live in a culture where incentives exist to encourage doing more with more – not doing more with less. Doing more with less is called “efficiency”, doing more with more is called “Gluttony”. Bigger, faster, more powerful vehicles that consume more fuel at faster rates, larger meals wrapped in complex, land-fill bound packaging, disposable products filling store shelves – you get the picture. Take the new wave of hybrid cars for example. Hybrid technology that was intended to produce spectacular fuel economy, was flipped around by car makers to instead, produce more horsepower for their new hybrid SUV’s! Less green, more mean.

Human Powered vehicles are all about trying to do more with less. How to go faster or farther with less energy. Technologies Incorporated into human powered vehicles like aerodynamics, wheel rolling resistance, mechanical efficiencies and size and weight optimization are directly applicable to the cars and boats and other vehicles that we rely upon in these modern times. Most importantly though, Interest in human power represents an essential shift in basic philosophy from one of ‘feasting on earths resources’ to a ‘do more with less’ ideal. human power

This video shows the massive effects that climate change are having on our planet. Global warming is producing climate change that has cauased natural disasters. The energy saving light bulbs is a very positive contributor to environmental sustainability. Evergy traditional light bulb that is changes for an energy saving light bulb can save 100kg in C02 emissions.

Going Green – How To Build A Green Home

In earlier days, most of the people are thinking that building a home with green principles is called as a bold investment and nobody are interested to do this. However, in these technology days, most of the people are so many organizations are finding the ways to lesson from global warming and these lessons has changes the entire things in Home Building Industry, especially around the Australian continent. And now most of the building contractors and house owners are trying to build a sustainable green home for their needs. There are so many eco builders are there in Australia are well knowing throughout the world. Most of the eco builders are named as best people in building a house they have modern designs and green principle and also without compromising style and architecture.

The way of their architecture and their principle towards securing the atmosphere and their dream of building these green buildings are attracted by the so many people, and at the same time they are offering timeless elegance and sophistication.   From the past decade, it has been observed that the rules and regulations of the constructing a building has been changed and most of the times, you need to follow some additional features to build these green homes. There are so many advantages with these green buildings that, you are able to reduce water and energy usage.Sometimes these homes are called as eco friendly home, and they will demonstrate improved energy, resource and water efficiency. With these types of works, you are able to reduce household running costs and green house gas emissions, which will be very good for environment. Another advantage with these green smart homes is you have some long term benefits such as lower energy and water bills, for years to come.

Finally, building green homes not only protects environmentally responsible home and these homes are cleaner and healthier for their family to live in.  And also you are able to enjoy the comfortable joy of living.  There are some well established and experienced web sites are providing this information like green videos and many more formats to their valued clients.  For more information and details, please visit their valuable web site.

Recycling Your Computer For A Greener Planet

The bad effects of air pollution can be experienced by the climate now-a-days, the entire weather cycle has distorted to a great extent. Our earth has become hotter than before and the weather has become truly uncomfortable and contaminated, all this has led to global warming which is a big reason to worry. Air pollution is due to harmful and toxic fumes released from factories, burning wastes and plastics, smoke from vehicles and also forest fire that pollute and destroy the air to a huge amount and for all this we will have to pay back in future. Anyhow all this can be controlled to a great level through recycling. Recycling means to process used and worn out products or machinery or apparatus into new products or machines so as to avoid wastage of items that are greatly valuable to us. By this manner the air is not polluted and aids us to save our earth and making it greener and newer. It is surprising that also computers can be recycled to make earth greener and a better place to live in. Actually computers are comfortable to handle and are very valuable to us and our kids. But when they are on the edge of breaking down, it produces a chaos and inturn your life becomes a total mess by getting it fixed and paying a great sum by changing its parts. So why not recycle it? Sounds unfeasible, but you can do that. The components and parts of the computer can not be just deserted away as they contain toxic chemicals, carcinogens and hard metal that make it work efficiently, but these are greatly harmful if let free in the air, you can not dispose these, but you can recycle your computers. You have to do this wisely and accurately so that it does not influence the atmosphere. These electronic wastes from highly advanced countries is exported to undeveloped countries where these useless components are developed to form a better and latest items and electronic goods, or are fitted into other equipment where these unwanted electronic components work successfully. In this manner the computer is recycled without disrupting the atmosphere. A well-known recycler should be able to make you aware as to how the information stored in the computer can be erased. You also have to format your hard disk before processing it for some other purpose as the private or the confidential data can be revealed to others. Hence you must clear all the vital data and the information fed in your computer before recycling it. Recycling of your computer is much superior than destroying it as it considerably reduces the dangerous effects caused to the climate otherwise. You can take great help from the recycling companies that aid you process your computer effortlessly. These types of organizations accept computers, laptops, printers, fax machines and all other parts of the computer. These companies either get the computers processed through others or may pack it off to different countries, but the handling and transporting need to be done cautiously. Anyhow, in the present electronic world we can\’t do without electrical goods and computers for that reason these have become an utmost necessity, so you need to contribute to a livelier planet, simply don\’t ignore your unwanted computer, get it recycled.

Green Homes: No Longer Just A Real Estate Fad

Green homes are eco-friendly homes that are energy efficient and use ecological design and sustainable resources. There has been a tremendous increase in awareness of the benefits of green building in America among builders and home owners alike. With home builders finding it easier to construct green homes, the number of green homes constructed throughout the country has gone up remarkably.

Ecological concerns and the increasing awareness of the advantages of green homes have led to an upsurge in green homes in the country. Concerns about the impact their homes have on the environment have prompted some homebuyers to opt for green homes.

Building green homes is no longer a remote concept these days. Over disturbing facts about global warming and indoor air pollution, today, the top priority of the National Home Builders Association and the American Institute of Architects is constructing green buildings.

There is sufficient data around that indicate that the building of green homes is on the rise. According to the figures provided by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) (who developed the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building rating system), the number of buildings with LEED status in America has increased from 38 in 2002 to 669 now. Green buildings are progressively entering the mainstream with more and more buildings getting LEED certification.

Given that green buildings do not cost very much more than traditional buildings, and that they actually reduce energy bills, the building of green homes is on the rise. A green building is not only less expensive to live in but also spikes in value by 7.5 percent on average and improves return on investment by 6.6 percent on average.

Green building concepts begin to rise everywhere as the number of individuals who want to remodel, build or buy green homes are rapidly increasing. Architects and developers are responding to satisfy this growing demand. Green buildings have been found to appreciate faster than traditional buildings.

What was once a patchwork of green buildings in several cities has now increased to encompass whole communities and neighborhoods. According to a McGraw-Hill Construction survey in 2006, about two-thirds of builders would be building green homes in America this year. Green buildings are firmly mainstream now with federal government and 15 states requiring new public buildings to meet the LEED standards. In fact, four U.S. states and 17 cities offer incentives for private buildings built to LEED standards.

With rising government initiatives, consumer interest and the number of green developers and builders, the green building revolution is all set to go to a new level.

The Effects of Consumerism on the Environment

We are at present in a situation where the planet’s ecology is not coping with all the pollution because of a huge, continuously increasing, consumer demand. This excessive demand for consumer products has created most of the current environmental imbalances. These imbalances will become a much greater problem than most people expect this to be. These imbalances have already caused ecological disasters in different places all over the world, with many more to follow.

This rate of consumption is increasing at an alarming rate. This will cause enormous environmental devastation in the future, to the extent that around 2025, people will need to complete major changes in their lifestyles to avoid the worst possible scenario.

The greenhouse gas effect is now so severe that around 2015, the whole planet will experience the result of rising temperatures in a far more severe way than most will expect.

While most people have begun to notice that the weather is changing they may not have understood that these climate changes are the forerunner of a much more serious problem. As a result most people are not changing their lifestyles, reducing their ecological footprint, resulting in a further increase of the present ecological imbalance.

With the ever continuing increase in environmental damage there will come a time where this will reach a point of no return, whereby the planet will no longer be able to support its own functioning. It is expected that by 2025, the planet will no longer be able to cope with the severe ecological damage. This will mainly be caused due to present geological stresses, further increase of global warming, and further destruction of the planet’s ecology which is so needed by the planet to provide support for its overall functioning.

It is of benefit for people to look at how they live their life and what they can do to change their lifestyle, so that an excessive need for goods and products will not become a major drive in one’s life. This may be difficult to do while the overall consensus is to buy more products. However, this is not reducing consumerism. At times, products may be needed to improve a lifestyle; however, people often wish to increase their buying and spending power and buy more products so they can feel better or can keep up with others. Thus, this need for an increase in products in the household creates an increase in the number of products manufactured, which in turn often results in an increase in environmental damage.

While humanity needs consumer goods, the impact these products or the production processes can have on the ecology has to be reduced. To save the environment humanity can no longer continue to increase its consumption of goods and, this should therefore not be encouraged. The human race needs to envisage a future whereby people still have their comforts but without the throw-away and polluting aspects of living, as is happening in most modern-day societies.

It is important that the planet’s worsening environmental crisis is taken seriously and action is taken to make adequate change to prevent a looming ecological crisis within the next twenty years. A simpler, less polluting lifestyle will result in a more manageable, sustainable environment, which as a result can function better as a support structure for the planet’s overall functioning.

Several years ago Mia was told by Spirit that by 2009 major climate changes would begin to show . This information can be found in her book – New Concepts for Business and Humanity. Chapter 1 can be downloaded for free from her website www.miadenhaan.com

Beautiful and Green Home

Today, I am going to talk about “What makes a beautiful and green home”.

Green has many meanings to many people. Some say, its a color and some say “it’s about our planet Earth”. And they all are right in their respective terminology. But with the current initiatives taken at various levels… for me Green is now increasingly about our environment. Yes, all those keywords like “Global warming”, “Solar”, “Wind power”, Hydro electric” etc it “ALL” boils down to environment friendly energy and more about “Environment Friendly Home”. Your Home. YES, now is a greater chance for all of us to participate and contribute in creating a Green, Environment Friendly Home. Did you notice, just few years back, you imagined that you had nothing to do with environment. And now, with new global initiatives you can be part of it, starting to contribute your few cents towards it.

So with that said, now a days, it all starts with your own home. We talk about installing a SOLAR panel. Agreed, its good. But before we do that, let us answer this question HONESTLY. As a home owner, how responsible we are to create a energy efficient home? What responsibility you have taken in your own home, in order to say proudly “YES, I am contributing in creating a energy efficient home”. If the answer to this question is YES, then probably your answer to following questions is YES as well. Please check out…

1>Do you switch OFF the lights in your rooms, when rooms are NOT occupied?
2>Do you switch OFF your air circulating systems (including FAN, AC, Heaters), when rooms are NOT occupied?
3>Do you turn OFF your TV, DVD, Video player, Audio system, when you are not watching/listening the program?
4>Do you turn OFF the sprinklers, when they are NOT in use?
5>Do your appliances go “Auto Off” mode, when NOT in use?
6>Do you have energy efficient dimmers, to control the energy consumption?
7>Does the HOT water keep running, when you really can suffice with cold water?
8>Does your water faucet keep dripping for NO reason?
9>Does the shower keep dripping for NO reason?
10>How about the laundry loads? Do we manage loads efficiently, so we dont have to RUN a second load?
11>How about the Vacuum cleaner? Is it being used efficiently?
12>Hope, Grills are running efficiently too.

So the point is, to contribute to our planet EARTH and environment, DOES NOT necessarily mean, shelling OUT few bucks and start installing panels. But, it can start with few baby steps.

Above precaution and measures could be your baby step towards a energy efficient home of your…

Sarah Palin and Environment, Global Warming and Drilling in Protected Areas

It’s killing time; you know they’re going to leave us. It’s approaching the fall/winter season as I write this. The guys will go out in the woods with their guns dragged from back seats of trucks and head out for sport. That sport is killing.

That’s what they do in a small town called Natchitoches where I live now and in La Grande, Oregon where I grew up. It’s a celebrated annual event. The local grocery has big wooden racks to display the killed. You can even buy postcards to add your picture, with you and the dead deer beside. You don’t need den walls for display anymore, just props for the trucks on the road.

Now I was raised on deer meat, and I like it. It makes sense when you need to feed a family, as my folks did years ago. But sport? Like football for cheering?

Sarah Palin likes hunting wolves, which aren’t creatures we think of sympathetically. But in research on mass murder and war it has been found that people who enjoy killing animals don’t mind killing people some time. (True Crime) A smile from someone who talks about the sport of killing wolves (Detroit Free Press) that is then beamed on a political stage to celebrate the possible death of one’s son should make many of us worry. (KNVN 24) Because if someone likes killing animals from the air and finds that fun and smiles when a son goes to war, then will that same person protect or worry about our sons in a world where killing is a sport?

Certain types of creatures have been on the Palin hit list for some time. Still they have more in common than that; they help keep the rest of us safe. So we should probably think about protecting these characters, especially given all the other problems we have because they are directly involved in what’s going on. What happened to them might be the proverbial tip ofThe iceberg to what might happen to us.

Let’s talk about fish first. Let’s talk about salmon. I don’t know about you, but salmon is my favorite fish, anytime and any place. I was born and raised in Oregon, in salmon country. I grew up with salmon steak and went out with friends and family to catch a few now and then. So I love them and know them well enough to want to make sure they get the right treatment. By that I mean I want their waters to be clean enough to keep them healthy, and I want them to have an overall environment to breed, make babies and keep lots of us fed.

Sarah Palin doesn’t have the same opinions about salmon as I do. Oh, she likes to catch and eat them, that’s true. Protecting them is a whole other matter. Palin can look right out the door and see fish that are dying, even when the lake near her house is stocked as the fish continue to die. In order to get commercial interests into Wasilla Palin sacrificed the environment to do it. An example is right in her own backyard. Lake Lucille has been declared seriously impaired and really dead and has been since 1994 when Palin was Mayor of Wasilla. That was documented by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and remains like that today. (Talbot)

One Wasilla resident has said, as reported in Salon.com, “Sarah’s legacy as mayor was big-box stores and runaway growth,” said Patty Stoll, a retired Wasilla schoolteacher. Stoll, as reported, worked with Palin’s parents, Chuck and Sally Heath, at the same school. She continued, “The truth is, Wasilla is just plain ugly, it’s not a pleasant place to live. It’s not thought out. And that’s a shame.

“Sarah fouled her own nest, and I can’t understand why. I hate to think it was simply greed or ambition.”(Talbot)

But that’s not the only reason why salmon are grieving and leaving. If they want to die, they would likely want to do that proudly and not in polluted waters. One would think that watching a lake turn bad, and the fish flounder as a result, that some clean water regulation would be welcomed. However, Sarah Palin did the opposite: she spoke out against the Clean Water Act. Palin and her public want mineral mining more than food without tapeworms, which salmon from Alaska now have in abundance. (Summer Johnson) I wonder how many people who eat salmon grown in Alaska worry about how that affects them today. Palin, it appears, may not care.

If you thought it was only fish that should worry, you need to know about bears. Sarah Palin is against classifying polar bears as endangered species. Palin told the public that scientists had said that polar bears were not endangered at all. When questioned, secrecy measures immediately began, as anyone who asked for the emails from scientists were kept at bay with large sums of money asked for disclosing them. Rick Steiner, a University of Alaska professor, was someone who had asked for them and was told that this request would be costly, as in $468,784. After going through federal records, Steiner found out that the scientists had indeed said that polar bears are an endangered species and worthy of protection. (Steiner)

Despite Steiner’s findings and the available knowledge about polar bears, Palin filed suit to keep the polar bears off the endangered list. Palin’s reason: she was worried that environmentalists are using the Endangered Species Act to block the extraction of oil and gas according to an interview she had earlier this year with Glenn Beck.

Palin also said that the population of polar bears is growing, but not according to the experts. One of them, Ian Stirling, who is a scientist who has studied polar bears for 37 years, says “Polar bear populations have not been increasing for the past 37 years, and that’s a well-known fact,” Stirling has studied polar bears more than anyone. So the issue is to lie, no matter the consequence to polar bears these days. That makes some people sad, just to think of how soft and cuddly they look, but who would feel sad for the wolves we’ll talk about next? (Stirland)

Most people don’t feel a sense of wonder and joy when they think about wolves. Actually most people get scared, but these days the wolves are. It’s one thing to keep wolves out of areas where people live and work, especially when they can eat not only livestock but people too if they are hungry enough. It’s another thing to make that a sport, just to kill for the fun of it. I’ve touched on that before, but it warrants inclusion with the fish and the bears.

Palin put a bounty on the heads of wolves, to encourage average citizens to load up their guns and go kill them, from the air, from everywhere. (Benjamin) That bounty was eventually stopped through legal action. Palin, however, wanted the practice to continue despite the ethical issues involved. All over the Internet there are pictures of Palin smiling over wolf carcasses as part of her campaign, so the practice continues certainly. Palin claims that humans killing wolves helps thin out the populations of predators that kill moose and elk which subsistence farmers in Alaska need to survive.

In defense of those wolves, not my friends surely, there’s not much scientific support for Palin’s position. In fact in 2007, 172 scientists wrote to Palin with their concerns about the lack of real science supporting killing the population of wolves. ( Benjamin) They are concerned about the balance of nature related to global warming taking place in the wilds of Alaska. (O’Brien) That didn’t influence Palin to change. The shooting continues and is applauded as well. In the wilderness of the gun, this is one more place people can practice sharp shooting. So what’s next for the propaganda machine that supports candidates like Palin who really don’t care about the effects of what they do on the rest of the world?

How someone thinks about life in any form, including protected animals, in relationship to the acquisition of material gain tells us something about how an individual might relate to victims of acts over which they have little control. Let’s learn about how Sarah Palin looks at certain social issues to try to figure out how she might respond to legislation surrounding such issues as domestic violence, sex abuse, and the rights of people with disabilities since these get to the core of her beliefs about life and how we should treat the least among us.

The Benefits Of Finding A Green Home

These days, there is an increasing awareness when it comes to being pro-environment.  Because of this, many people and even companies who are participating in green campaigns.  Even builders today are also doing their part in going green movements by building green homes.  As expected, the following year would show an increase in promoting these types of houses.

However, what are the benefits of finding a green home?  You can list a plethora of benefits in getting this type of home in terms of health, costs and environment.

For health, you will surely get a house that is free from toxins as the materials used in building these homes are safe.  At the same time, they can prevent intrusion of allergens and pollution.  This will prevent respiratory problems to your families.

Aside from the preventing allergens and pollutants, the materials used in building these homes promote proper ventilation.  In this way, you will have good air circulation plus the fact that you are only getting fresh hair inside the house.

For the environment, these houses prevent too much energy usage since its materials allow proper ventilation.  Less usage of energy results to less heat production that is detrimental to our environment as it contributes to global warming.  With green houses, it is possible to save energy up to 40% of energy.  This will make us more dependent on natural energy than the ones available in the market.

Another benefit is that it is not contributing that much waste to the environment.  Building a property would give a lot of waste to the landfills.  Whereas the materials used in green homes are recycled materials so they are far more natural.  Building green homes are would lessen landfill wastes.

Getting these homes would also make it possible for you to save a lot when it comes to water consumption.  They have made the houses efficient in terms of irrigation and water system.  This would prevent you from wasting too much water especially during summer time.

When it comes to costs, you are already saving a lot of money when it comes to electric and water bills since you have been saving a lot in energy and water consumption.  Aside from this, getting a green home is cheaper than getting the regular ones.  The professionals who are making these houses would give you high quality homes at a very affordable price.

Since the house gives you a lot of health benefits, you will be able to save a lot of money when it comes to medical consultations.  This will save you a lot in terms of checkups and even medical admissions.  Not leaving due to health reasons will not cause you to miss your work and deduct your absences to your paycheck.

Green homes definitely have a lot of benefits for those who will buy them.  These types of house are considered as an innovation when it comes to property building but in a very helpful manner for everyone.

Computer Recycling: What You Need To Know

Recycling is one of the best ways in which to have a positive impact upon the world in which we live in. Recycling is highly beneficial for the natural environment and human beings. The amount of the rubbish we create and dump into the environment is rapidly increasing everyday, which is having a horrendous effect on the environment, resulting in global warming and the increase in temperature rise.

The reasons why we are creating more waste are due to; increase in wealth, therefore we have more money to buy products, resulting in more waste. Increase in population means, there are more people creating waste. New packaging and technological products are being developed, much of these products contain materials that are not biodegradable.

Recycling is incredibly important as waste has an extremely negative blow upon the ecosystem. Harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses are released from rubbish in landfill sites. Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste. Habitat destruction and global warming are some the affects caused by deforestation. Recycling reduces the need for raw materials so that the rainforests can be preserved.

The production of computer parts involves numerous chemicals which are highly dangerous to our health and surroundings. The Information Technology production industry has enormous carbon imprints; however the carbon imprints can be reduced through recycling of computer components.

In order to produce computer parts the IT industry uses raw dwindling resources and materials which are already relatively scarce. It is a well known fact that major companies only keep IT equipment for around 3 years and then dispose of it. Most of the IT equipment is in good condition and can be reused and deployed in the use of charities, homes, schools etc.

Recycling can help in the deployment of old computers, computer components and other computer related equipment, recycling redundant and damaged computers can be turned into component metals which can then go towards building new computer or fixing damaged machines.

Most of the environmental concerns which lie with inappropriate disposal of computers are the monitor. Each colour monitor contains on an average of 4 to 5 pounds of lead. Other chemicals found in computers are mercury, cadmium a known carcinogen and Hexavalent Chromium which is known to cause high blood pressure, iron-poor blood, liver disease, and nerve and brain damage in animals.

Organisations such as Oxfam have set up schemes where other charities and schools in the third world can benefit from old disposed computers. Oxfam collect old computers in order to raise money to help those in need. By disposing of computers in this way, you can help the environment and decrease the population levels. Also at the same time companies can feel good about the way they have disposed computers, knowing that they are helping others.

It is very important to recycle computers, due to high number of computers being disposed of incorrectly or just stored away, is increasing the risk of polluting the environment with unfriendly toxins and excess waste.

Basically any part / component of a computer can be recycled, the keyboard, mouse, printer and monitor. The steel cases can be sold on for scrap metals, as can the chassis of the computer, floppy drive chassis, hard drive cases and drive platters. Heat sinks have to be separated out during the recycling process due to their high aluminium alloy content and these are recycled separately and for less money per kilo nonetheless still worth a cash value.

Just by correctly disposing products can help the environment greatly. By doing this you are also doing your bit to help fight against global warming, habitat destruction and deforestation. All things which are harmful to us and the future generations that have to live on this planet. Due to vast amount of computer waste, computers could become more expensive, due to European laws may force makers to recycle old machines and computer hardware in order to help the environment.

Computer experts have warmed when the new laws are put into force overall computer prices may levitate to anything between $50 to $100. This may force companies into leasing computers to reduce their CPA, and bring down cost in general.

Overall disposing of computers correctly by recycling parts and components could result in a better cleaner less toxic environment. Cleaner environment means less global warming, habitat destruction and deforestation. Also reducing the amount of raw materials needed in order to produce these machines. It is therefore highly important to dispose of the computer in the right place. In many countries dumping of electronic equipment in many areas is banned due to highly toxic chemicals in some components.

How You Can Help the Environment by Recycling

Global warming is a very real threat to the preservation of our planet and recycling is one of many ways that people can cut down the amount of carbon dioxide that is released into our atmosphere.

Not only is recycling environmentally friendly, it is also cost effective since it reduces the amount of waste for disposal, saves space in landfills, is more energy-efficient than burning materials, and conserves natural resources. Reducing or nearly eliminating the need for these processes, therefore, achieves huge savings in energy. Did you know for example that recycling aluminium cans saves around ninety percent of the energy required to make the same amount of aluminium from new.

Recycling is more important than ever because just throwing away rubbish into a landfill or digging a hole and burying it is not a solution to the global waste problem. Our landfills are overflowing with hazardous waste and other products that are not biodegradable. Most organic waste items such as food will break down and decompose in a matter of weeks, leaving no trace. However, plastic bottles, disposable diapers and Styrofoam containers, to name a few, are all becoming huge problems in most areas of the world.

Recycling can mean the difference between a clean planet and one overrun by garbage. You may not believe it but we can all begin to make a difference towards preserving this Earth from landfills that are quickly becoming full to overflowing. The quality of future lives starts now, with your decision to recycle your own garbage.

Recycling is easy once you get everything sorted. You will need to sort out the recyclables such as glass bottles, plastics cartons and paper into the appropriate bins and from there, those materials are sent on their way to becoming something else for use. You can also utilize those food scraps and waste trimmings from the yard in a compost heap.

If every person did their part to help combat overflowing landfills, then we could reduce our waste by fifty percent which is half the amount going into landfills today. Perhaps there will come a time when we no longer have to continuously find new places to bury our waste. Plastics would be reused and organic materials would be turned back into the soil to enrich the ground for crops. It is a nice thought but the reality is that not enough people are doing their part to help make this a cleaner world.

Recycling is your responsibility and only you can do your part to help reduce the amount of garbage going into our landfills. Each time you throw away a recyclable you are adding to a growing problem. Deciding to recycle is an easy step and one that is remarkably simple to initiate. If you do not know where to start, there are plenty of resources, such as your local environmental department, to help you learn how to recycle your leftover waste

Do yourself and the earth a favour by doing your part. Your grand children and great grand children will thank you for it.

Monaco Environment Plan Starts To Work

When Prince Albert became Monaco’s Sovereign two years ago he soon set a path that would show him to be a leader among leaders for the environment movement.

In an effort to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and use public transport – not easy in a country that has the highest density of millionaire’s in the world – bus fares were cut to a Euro for a single journey, and a year later figures show bus usage has risen 17 per cent.

Prince Albert visited the North Pole last year to publicise how the arctic regions are changing with global warming, and one of his first acts as Monaco’s Sovereign was to sign the Kyoto Protocol – along with the US, Monaco was one of the few countries in the world not to endorse it before Prince Albert put pen to paper.

As well as the Monaco Grand Prix, the principality is Europe’s best known tax haven, with residents enjoying a zero rated income tax.

With property prices among the highest in the world, residents of Monaco normally need to spend six months a year there to maintain residency.

An announcement has been made recently that a new island is to be built off Monte Carlo, and this will provide more land and property in the world’s second smallest country.

Bidders for the development have been asked to take the environment into account – and also the Monaco Grand Prix, which suggests a possible new route for the race.

Despite being one of the world’s most glamourous sporting events the Monaco Grand Prix is notorious for a lack of overtaking opportunities, and the new space might in time address the historical criticism of the race.

Property prices in Monaco are high due to the lack of land – in the past one of the districts, Fontvieille, had much of its area reclaimed from the sea, but property prices there equal those of the better known Monte Carlo.

One of the most popular buildings in Fontvieille, Seaside Plaza, has average prices of three to four million Euros for a three bedroom apartment, and a four bedroom four bathroom one is currently on the market at close to ten million Euros.

With a population of under 40,000 Monaco could be forgiven for believing that overseas embassies were an unnecessary expense.

Until now the world’s second smallest country has been content to co-operate with French embassies around the world for any necessary representation.

But Monaco has just opened her first independent embassy outside of Europe – in Washington D.C.

Commenting on the new embassy, one local Monaco travel guide says that despite the population equivalent of a small US town, environmental reasons could be behind the move.

‘Forget about this being primarily for Monegasques running into trouble in the US and needing assistance. We think this is more to do with Prince Albert wanting to influence the movers and shakers in the world as he is very concerned about global warming and the environment generally. And where better for that than Washington? It’s Monaco’s greenhouse next to the White House.’

The new embassy, chosen after a visit by Prince Albert, is in the Kalorama district of Washington.

Polluting the Mental Environment

On Sunday night, I sat down to watch a Fox News special on the threat of global warming. In a very Fox-like way, all the information was quickly edited, highly graphical and had a great soundtrack. But in a very un-Fox-like way, the point of the program was to present the viewpoint that yes, global warming was real, and yes, human beings are actively contributing to its advance.

So what kind of advertisers would dare to put their commercials on such a controversial show? During the first commercial break, I decided to keep a list of all the spots I saw during that hour.

First off, there were 32 commercials in this one hour. Thirty-freakin’-two. I wouldn’t have recalled a single one of them if I hadn’t written them down. That’s 16 minutes worth of commercials—not counting Fox’s own promos. Simply put, there’s too damned much advertising for any of it to be effective. When will TV networks get the hint?

But quantity of ads is an easy fix. What intrigued me even more was that as I was confronted with melting icecaps, fragile ecosystems and some very dire predictions, not one marketer thought this program and its subject matter deserved any special attention or special message.

The first commercial of the hour was for a new one-use plastic dental floss device that’s already pre-threaded. So right off the bat, I’m hit with a product whose main benefit is that you can use it once and throw it straight into the garbage. Which, in turn, goes to some landfill somewhere, never to decompose. While this product may have an interesting benefit, the first thought I had after seeing this commercial was how wasteful the product is—and how wasted the client’s money was placing it on this show.

5 car manufacturers were brave enough, or foolish enough, to advertise on Fox’s global warming special. 3 of them touted cars with V8 engines. And one was specifically promoting a car with an “air-cooled glove box” – which I’m guessing simultaneously keeps your stuff cool in our now extra-globally-warmed environment and spews more crap into the environment because of the extra needed refrigerant. More wrongheaded media planning.

The only oil company that advertised on the show wasn’t advertising its cleaner gas, alternative fuel sources or new environmental initiatives, it was pushing a credit card for its gas stations. Another dubious media placement.

The rest of the spots seemed incredibly random—beer, investments, assorted pills, delivery services, an electric shaver, a couple of dot-coms, wireless service, a diabetes meter. And a couple of hideous local TV spots for extra suffering.

After I reviewed the list of advertisers, I wondered: Where’s all this supposed creativity in media? Where’s the planning? Is anyone responsible for these ad placements paying attention?

Why was I watching a TV show on global warming and no one tried to sell me a hybrid car or a bicycle? I was in the mood to listen. Whether a product represented a major lifestyle change or a little eco-friendly gesture, any advertiser seeking to appeal to an environmentally conscious audience had their chance—and blew it.

Now, I’m not a media planner. So I couldn’t tell you if there’s a way to always ensure that appropriate messages match the appropriate TV programming. But as TV ratings come under increasing scrutiny, the key to television advertising’s future effectiveness may not come through numbers, but through the relevance and appropriateness of when and where people see that advertising. Of course, you can’t convert that idea into an equation and slap it into an Excel document to justify your 15% commission.

So thanks to Fox, I learned quite a bit about our environment—both the physical and mental ones. If you don’t believe me, do what I did. Sit for an hour and watch TV uninterrupted. Pay attention to what pops up during the commercial breaks.

The power of television advertising won’t die, but it’s melting away. And while it’s partially a function of time and technology, it’s also partially something the ad industry has brought upon itself. And the time to take action is now. Otherwise, all of our careers could be facing extinction.
