As Earth Day 2006 passes, there seems to be good news on the environmental scene, which should come as welcome change to anyone concerned about the state of our Earth. That’s in stark contrast to the first Earth Day, back in 1970.

Earth Day 2006 saw lakes in New England beginning to rebound from their sorry condition after being bombarded by acid rain for decades. The acid rain itself has decreased, as well, and the sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides that comprise most of our air pollution have diminished by some 50 percent–due in no small part to the fact that the burning of leaded gas is virtually a thing of the past.

Environmentalists have also been encouraged to discover that a number of endangered species, including America’s national symbol, the bald eagle, as well as wolves and grizzly bears, have begun making a promising comeback. All of that good news is even more significant when you compare today’s environment to the way things were on the first Earth Day.

In Ohio, the Cuyahoga River was so polluted that it actually caught fire. In New York, all of the residents of a neighborhood called Love Canal were forced to move away forever when it was discovered that their homes had been built upon a toxic chemical waste dump. Pollution in cities was so bad that residents were told to stay inside because the air was actually hazardous to breathe during “code red” days.

The interesting thing is that the environmental improvements took place in spite of increased pressure in America. For instance, EPA statistics show that the total emissions of the six major air pollutants dropped by more than 50 percent, even though America’s population increased by 40 percent and energy consumption increased by 47 percent. Automobile hydrocarbon emissions also decreased during that time, despite the fact that both the number of vehicles and amount of miles driven more than doubled.

All in all, it appears as if America is headed in the right direction in regard to the environment. It’s been a fierce, hand-to-hand battle, but the country is moving forward, thanks to dedicated environmentalists and bureaucrats at all levels of government.

However, even though American rivers don’t catch fire anymore and the smog levels have decreased in most major cities, there’s still a long way to go. Urban sprawl is still endangering woodlands, prairies, and farmland, and global warming is still on the rise. Even so, the overall trend is positive. But we must all work to continue the momentum set in motion by the first Earth Day in 1970.

FOLLOW SKYS FROGMEN TIPS AND SAVE £2000 A YEAR Taking a daily shower instead of a bath can save £35 a year in energy bills Cycling around 20 miles to work instead of taking a train will save 40 kilos of green house gases a month. Thats the same as £88 off your energy bill. Turning a household thermostat down by 1°C will save £65 each year and on an average gas bill. Turning off unused lights in the home will save you £15 whilst swapping all of the lights in the home to energy saving ones will save £45 per year By fitting a high efficiency boiler and improving household heating controls, you can save £275 a year on energy bills and of 1.2 tonnes of green house gases Cycling to work from Zone 3 to Zone 1 in London, instead of travelling by Tube, would save you around £1500 a year on travel bills www.earthdaycounts.co.uk Sources: Environment Agency / Stop Global Warming Organisation / Department for Transport / www.dothegreenthing.com / British Gas / Energy Saving Trust

Green homes are the trend these days. In a world where people are fast using up the earth’s natural resources and irreversibly so, green buildings have gained importance in the real estate industry. Green building techniques include the use of building materials that are renewable and locally available. Green homes protect the environment, control energy costs and may serve as affordable housing. Today more and more builders are focusing on building green homes as these structures are proving to be profitable investments.

Many people believe that building green homes is a social and environmental responsibility and should be promoted by not just governmental authorities, but also by builders, developers and real estate professionals. Green homes save money and maintenance and are healthier to live in.

Building a green home is not complicated as one would think. The National Association of Home Builders has listed guidelines for building green homes that are very useful for home builders. The guidelines include an easy-to-use checklist that builders can follow during the construction process. With local home building associations creating regionally appropriate green building programs, the concept of ‘green homes’ is taking off among home builders.

Some people believe that building green homes involves a lot of money, at least more than conventional homes do. On the contrary, experienced green home builders say that building a green home is not as expensive as it is hyped to be. Custom builders can build green properties at the same costs it takes to build conventional homes because green building materials are now readily available and cost efficient. Green products such as user-friendly insulation, chemically neutral paints and flooring, natural landscaping products, compact fluorescent bulbs, solar roof panels, etc. are all readily available. Because most green products are energy efficient, installing them helps the home owner save a lot of money that otherwise would go toward footing a home’s utility bills.

Environmental consultant David Johnson in his book “Building Green in a Black and White World” provides extensive survey information on home buyers’ preference of green homes. One national survey puts the percentage of the market that is open to and interested in green buildings at a whopping 50%. This is proof enough for the growing popularity and demand for green homes. Builders can join their local green building programs to take advantage of this growing market segment. Home buyers can opt for green homes, which are energy efficient, environmentally friendly, durable and cost efficient.

The bad effects of air pollution can be experienced by the climate now-a-days, the entire weather cycle has distorted to a great extent. Our earth has become hotter than before and the weather has become truly uncomfortable and contaminated, all this has led to global warming which is a big reason to worry. Air pollution is due to harmful and toxic fumes released from factories, burning wastes and plastics, smoke from vehicles and also forest fire that pollute and destroy the air to a huge amount and for all this we will have to pay back in future. Anyhow all this can be controlled to a great level through recycling. Recycling means to process used and worn out products or machinery or apparatus into new products or machines so as to avoid wastage of items that are greatly valuable to us. By this manner the air is not polluted and aids us to save our earth and making it greener and newer. It is surprising that also computers can be recycled to make earth greener and a better place to live in. Actually computers are comfortable to handle and are very valuable to us and our kids. But when they are on the edge of breaking down, it produces a chaos and inturn your life becomes a total mess by getting it fixed and paying a great sum by changing its parts. So why not recycle it? Sounds unfeasible, but you can do that. The components and parts of the computer can not be just deserted away as they contain toxic chemicals, carcinogens and hard metal that make it work efficiently, but these are greatly harmful if let free in the air, you can not dispose these, but you can recycle your computers. You have to do this wisely and accurately so that it does not influence the atmosphere. These electronic wastes from highly advanced countries is exported to undeveloped countries where these useless components are developed to form a better and latest items and electronic goods, or are fitted into other equipment where these unwanted electronic components work successfully. In this manner the computer is recycled without disrupting the atmosphere. A well-known recycler should be able to make you aware as to how the information stored in the computer can be erased. You also have to format your hard disk before processing it for some other purpose as the private or the confidential data can be revealed to others. Hence you must clear all the vital data and the information fed in your computer before recycling it. Recycling of your computer is much superior than destroying it as it considerably reduces the dangerous effects caused to the climate otherwise. You can take great help from the recycling companies that aid you process your computer effortlessly. These types of organizations accept computers, laptops, printers, fax machines and all other parts of the computer. These companies either get the computers processed through others or may pack it off to different countries, but the handling and transporting need to be done cautiously. Anyhow, in the present electronic world we can\’t do without electrical goods and computers for that reason these have become an utmost necessity, so you need to contribute to a livelier planet, simply don\’t ignore your unwanted computer, get it recycled.

Studies show that the younger the children are when they start, the more likely they are to stick with it.

Make A Fun Delivery

One of the greatest ways to incorporate recycling container into children’s lives is to have fun getting the materials into the bins. It also gives you a chance to add science into the equation. Get the kids together to design an ‘amazing machine’ with various materials such as Styrofoam cups, strings, marbles, and plastics. Paper, for example, can then be crumpled into a ball and sat in a ‘truck’. The truck can make falls and jumps, go through tunnels, and over obstacles on its way to the bins for recycling. This gives children an insight into basic physics, have fun putting it all together, and testing it.

Let Kids Help

Let children help when it comes to sorting and emptying bins for recycling. Each day, designate a few children as ‘earth officers’. They can make sure that all of the used materials go into the bin. At the end of the day, they can help you sort items from small bins into the larger ones for pick up and dump recycling containers that are already full. Each day they do their job successfully, they earn a sticker on a ‘green chart’ that can be used to earn privileges and prizes.

Games

Adding games into green activities are ideal for educating children and satisfying their curiosity for the world around them. In a classroom setting, for instance, let kids ball up the paper that would normally be tossed in bins for recycling. Line up the balls in a circle around the classroom so they can see how much they use in a day.

You can even make it into a contest to see how short they can make the line by reusing paper or using alternatives. This gives the kids an opportunity to come up with solutions (using chalk boards or miniature white boards) to cut down on the amount of waste they make each day.

Another twist on this idea is to let kids design their own recycling containers. They can use shoeboxes, cereal boxes, milk jugs, or other materials. See how creative they can be making their bins and how empty they can keep them.

Bins for recycling are a quick and easy way to instill green living in the lives of children. They will grow up respecting the environment and learn to make conscious decisions about their actions. Once recycling containers are in full use, incorporate these ideas into other eco-friendly activities and watch the kids flourish while they learn to save the earth.

With growing pressure on the environment and the need for the nation to economise, it’s now more important than ever to conserve and reuse packaging.

Reusing packaging is the best form of recycling, because it doesn’t require further use of energy, either in converting or transporting the packaging prior to use.

As a specialist packaging supplies company we believe we have a duty to encourage Customers to give greater thought to the packaging they buy and make better use of the packaging materials they retain.

As a packaging supplier, does this mean fewer sales of packaging materials? On the contrary, we’re finding that Customers are more conscious about packaging generally and are more comfortable ordering packaging materials from a supplier that:

• Understands the Customers’ needs and is able to work to reduce their carbon footprint and support their sustainable environmental policy

• Offers environmentally better packaging, such as recycled, reusable and degradable packaging products

• Advises them on ways to economise on packaging and reduce the overall weight of packaging materials used

So whether you’re looking to save money or save the planet, buying the right packaging for the job, planning ahead for its re-use and using recycled packaging materials are some of the key steps to take.

The most important part of this cycle of recycled cardboard boxes is you the buyer. Without people willing to buy recycled cardboard boxes it would just end up in landfill. So make sure when you next buy packaging you ask for recycled packaging.

With this in mind, read our top 10 tips to reuse some of your packaging, save on packaging costs and also help the environment:

Make sure your packaging doesn’t cost the earth! For further information, visit http://www.davpack.co.uk or call Davpack on 01332 821200.
