Good News for the Environment and Earth Day

As Earth Day 2006 passes, there seems to be good news on the environmental scene, which should come as welcome change to anyone concerned about the state of our Earth. That’s in stark contrast to the first Earth Day, back in 1970.

Earth Day 2006 saw lakes in New England beginning to rebound from their sorry condition after being bombarded by acid rain for decades. The acid rain itself has decreased, as well, and the sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides that comprise most of our air pollution have diminished by some 50 percent–due in no small part to the fact that the burning of leaded gas is virtually a thing of the past.

Environmentalists have also been encouraged to discover that a number of endangered species, including America’s national symbol, the bald eagle, as well as wolves and grizzly bears, have begun making a promising comeback. All of that good news is even more significant when you compare today’s environment to the way things were on the first Earth Day.

In Ohio, the Cuyahoga River was so polluted that it actually caught fire. In New York, all of the residents of a neighborhood called Love Canal were forced to move away forever when it was discovered that their homes had been built upon a toxic chemical waste dump. Pollution in cities was so bad that residents were told to stay inside because the air was actually hazardous to breathe during “code red” days.

The interesting thing is that the environmental improvements took place in spite of increased pressure in America. For instance, EPA statistics show that the total emissions of the six major air pollutants dropped by more than 50 percent, even though America’s population increased by 40 percent and energy consumption increased by 47 percent. Automobile hydrocarbon emissions also decreased during that time, despite the fact that both the number of vehicles and amount of miles driven more than doubled.

All in all, it appears as if America is headed in the right direction in regard to the environment. It’s been a fierce, hand-to-hand battle, but the country is moving forward, thanks to dedicated environmentalists and bureaucrats at all levels of government.

However, even though American rivers don’t catch fire anymore and the smog levels have decreased in most major cities, there’s still a long way to go. Urban sprawl is still endangering woodlands, prairies, and farmland, and global warming is still on the rise. Even so, the overall trend is positive. But we must all work to continue the momentum set in motion by the first Earth Day in 1970.

Green homes are the trend these days. In a world where people are fast using up the earth’s natural resources and irreversibly so, green buildings have gained importance in the real estate industry. Green building techniques include the use of building materials that are renewable and locally available. Green homes protect the environment, control energy costs and may serve as affordable housing. Because most green products are energy efficient, installing them helps the home owner save a lot of money that otherwise would go toward footing a home’s utility bills.

Environmental consultant David Johnson in his book “Building Green in a Black and White World” provides extensive survey information on home buyers’ preference of green homes. One national survey puts the percentage of the market that is open to and interested in green buildings at a whopping 50%. This is proof enough for the growing popularity and demand for green homes. Builders can join their local green building programs to take advantage of this growing market segment. Home buyers can opt for green homes, which are energy efficient, environmentally friendly, durable and cost efficient.

It is surprising that also computers can be recycled to make earth greener and a better place to live in. Actually computers are comfortable to handle and are very valuable to us and our kids. But when they are on the edge of breaking down, it produces a chaos and inturn your life becomes a total mess by getting it fixed and paying a great sum by changing its parts. So why not recycle it? Sounds unfeasible, but you can do that. Tips For Recycling Containers – Get Kids Using Bins For Recycling

Getting children to use recycling containers consistently can be a bit of a challenge at first – particularly in schools, youth centers, and other organizations where there is a large number of children. Bins for recycling are a great place to start when it comes to showing children the importance of helping the environment and incorporating eco-friendly practices into their daily life. Studies show that the younger the children are when they start, the more likely they are to stick with it.

Make A Fun Delivery

One of the greatest ways to incorporate recycling container into children’s lives is to have fun getting the materials into the bins. It also gives you a chance to add science into the equation. Get the kids together to design an ‘amazing machine’ with various materials such as Styrofoam cups, strings, marbles, and plastics. Paper, for example, can then be crumpled into a ball and sat in a ‘truck’. The truck can make falls and jumps, go through tunnels, and over obstacles on its way to the bins for recycling. This gives children an insight into basic physics, have fun putting it all together, and testing it.

Let Kids Help

Let children help when it comes to sorting and emptying bins for recycling. Each day, designate a few children as ‘earth officers’. They can make sure that all of the used materials go into the bin. At the end of the day, they can help you sort items from small bins into the larger ones for pick up and dump recycling containers that are already full. Each day they do their job successfully, they earn a sticker on a ‘green chart’ that can be used to earn privileges and prizes.

Games

Adding games into green activities are ideal for educating children and satisfying their curiosity for the world around them. In a classroom setting, for instance, let kids ball up the paper that would normally be tossed in bins for recycling. Line up the balls in a circle around the classroom so they can see how much they use in a day.

You can even make it into a contest to see how short they can make the line by reusing paper or using alternatives. This gives the kids an opportunity to come up with solutions (using chalk boards or miniature white boards) to cut down on the amount of waste they make each day.

Another twist on this idea is to let kids design their own recycling containers. They can use shoeboxes, cereal boxes, milk jugs, or other materials. See how creative they can be making their bins and how empty they can keep them.

Bins for recycling are a quick and easy way to instill green living in the lives of children. They will grow up respecting the environment and learn to make conscious decisions about their actions. Once recycling containers are in full use, incorporate these ideas into other eco-friendly activities and watch the kids flourish while they learn to save the earth.
